Hello
Lovely day today…..’spiffing’ – the middle son said and he was right.
We ventured out on the second of the paths around Abbotsford from the Scottish Borders Council booklet (which you can download for free from their website, or pick up for £2 at Abbotsford House). This, just over 4 mile circular route, included a linear detour to Cauldshiels Loch, a path alongside Faldonside Loch and some truly stunning views.

Hello again
It’s a short walk up to the castle from home, and back again. Takes about an hour with a few stops to admire the views and watch the hares. Here’s what it looked like today.

I started on a new project yesterday – I do love a project! I thought I’d walk The Borders Abbeys Way and then go on and walk the other ‘ways’. There’s St Cuthbert’s Way and The Southern Upland Way and lots more I’m sure. Continue reading

Yesterday we took advantage of the sunshine – even though there was no thaw in sight – and travelled north for just under an hour to North Berwick in East Lothian. No snow here but it was freezing cold…..bracing is the word!
Sometimes we catch the bus from North Berwick to Aberlady, a beautiful village on the Firth of Forth with excellent bird watching. Then we walk back across golf courses and through woodland until we reach the coast path back to North Berwick which is a fair old distance! Or we might get off the bus at Dirleton, a hamlet a little way inland and about 5 miles out of North Berwick. There are lovely castle gardens and a tea room to take advantage of before making our way back along the beach. Continue reading

Let’s not mention the weather today…..
This morning we made our way to the town of Duns (pronounced Dunce) to follow a walk from a new book of mine called ‘Walks for All Ages – 20 Circular Walks in the Scottish Borders’. As you can imagine, nothing too strenuous – which is okay at the moment! This was meant to be a 3.75 mile easy walk through the grounds of Duns Castle to be accomplished in 2 hours. I’m not convinced it was that long, unless it was just that it was all on the level and we were walking fairly quickly due to the unmentionable conditions. Never mind, it was nonetheless, a lovely walk around a beautiful estate managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and lacked only a tea room at the end! – one to go back to in the spring I think. It’s slow going with the walking so far this year – life is just too busy at the moment!
Never mind, the kitchen is nearly finished at least and I’m hopeful the weather is going to improve. I’m reliably informed that daffodils are blooming in Cornwall – surely it can’t be too long before we see them up here too! However, although the snow has all gone for now – the rain is back!
Last weekend whilst the snow was still lying in parts, Mr RR and I took a 6 mile ramble along the Teviot accompanied by middle son. It was very icy underfoot and hard going in parts, but despite the need to constantly watch where my feet were going I did enjoy it.
We’ve also managed a couple of short local walks in between storms and floods but I’m itching to get out and about a bit more now. Sadly its not going to happen this week…..but watch this space, there are some keen walkers around and about and I’m hoping to join them for some exercise very soon. Continue reading
