The Place of the Monks in Monkish Land

Monday, 6th July 2015

Hello

Our walk today begins at Manaccan, a pretty little village mentioned in the Charter of King Eadgar from 967.  Here Manaccan is called Lesmanoc – Place of the Monks.  The village is in the Parish of Manaccan, which, together with St Anthony and others, forms part of the Lizard Peninsula known as Meneage – Monkish Land. Tramping around Trelissick

Wednesday, 1st July 2015

Well, its July people!

I was just counting up the walking weeks since January – I’m exactly halfway through the walking year – the 26th week of walking. That means by the end of this week I should have walked 520 miles to keep on target.  So far I’ve walked 451 miles.  Hmmm…..just a little bit behind!

So…a bit of catching up to do if I’m to complete the 1000 miles in a year.  I have to confess, it may not happen.  There’s such a lot going on at the moment that it’s getting difficult to fit in the miles.

However, I’ve learnt so much since I started.  I can identify loads of wild flowers ( I do sometimes annoy Mr RR by testing him while we’re out walking!), some butterflies and insects and I’m getting better on the birds.  I’m not much good on trees though – watch this space!

Today we wandered around the River Fal at Trelissick, found some tracks we hadn’t walked on before and saw a heron – which, as you know, is one of my favourites: Continue reading

Fields of Gold on Rosemullion Head

Saturday, 27th June 2015

Hello

You know that song:

“You’ll remember me when the west wind blows upon the fields of barley

You’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky as we walk in fields of gold”

Love it!

That’s what we did today – walked in fields of gold:DSCN0927

The Way Through The Woods and the Holloway

Wednesday, 24th June 2015

Hello there,

Way back in October 2013 (was it really that long ago???) my very good friend Suzy B and I went for a walk in Cardinham Woods.  It was to be a short walk followed by a civilised lunch at the Woods Cafe.  We set off undaunted by the rain, with no map, no directions, no water and just a flapjack for sustenance (which I fed to a horse before I realised I might need it later!).

Within an hour we were hopelessly lost, no longer in the woods, on moorland somewhere, trying to get Suzy B’s iPhone to tell us which way to go.  Eventually we decided to head for a church tower we could see in the far distance, convinced this was Cardinham – which luckily it was – and sure that once we got to the village, the way home would be clear.  We eventually crawled back to the Woods Cafe just before closing time, exhausted and bedraggled. The lovely lady gave us her last two bowls of potato and leek soup and we flumped down to eat, convinced we would never be able to get up again.  Its a walk I will never forget. Continue reading

Harcourt Arboretum

Wednesday, 27th May 2015

Hello

Before leaving Oxford we visited Harcourt Arboretum. Part of the University of Oxford, it is 130 acres of trees, rhododendrons, bluebell woods and wildflower meadows, just 5 or 6 miles outside of Oxford City Centre. Continue reading

Pretty at Penrose

Friday 22nd May, 2015

Hi,

I took myself off for a stroll around Penrose today, I haven’t been for a while.  It’s all very pretty with the bluebells still in flower alongside red campion, cow parsley, buttercups and daisies.  The foxgloves are just coming into flower now as well.

I’m sure I heard a cuckoo!  I had a listen on utube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1WcxRaMmIM) and it’s definitely the same sound.  I couldn’t see him anywhere, though he sounded quite close.  Then, in the distance I heard an owl twitwooing – something must have woken him from his sleep. The Way Through the Woods…

Monday, 4th May 2015 (Day 1, week 18)

Aiming to walk 1000 miles in a year

Total so far: 331.7 miles (4.6 miles this week)

Hello

Despite the grey clouds and threatening rain I decided to venture up to the woods to see how the bluebells were coming along.  I was not disappointed!  It was astonishing to see the carpet of vivid blue amongst the trees – so difficult to capture on camera, but there are lots of photos here anyway!   Continue reading

Porthleven Food Festival

Saturday, 25th April 2015, (Day 6, week 16)

Aiming to walk 1000 miles in a year

Total so far: 315 miles (9.6 miles this week)

Hello – from not so sunny Porthleven where the Food Festival is in full swing!

Staying around Porthleven today, I wanted to see how the bluebell woods in Penrose were coming on so we did a quick walk through the estate before heading back to the Festival.DSCF1098

Beaten by bovinophobia!

Friday, 17th April 2015 (Day 5, week 15)

Aiming for 1000 miles in a year

300.1 miles walked so far – 14.9 miles this week

Hello

Bovinophobia – fear of cows has proved my downfall today!  I know, I said I’d managed to overcome it mostly, but today it reared it’s ugly head and we had to beat a hasty retreat from a field of threatening bovines, putting an early end to a sadly uninspiring ramble around Constantine.

We were using a little book called Five Walks around Constantine which contains lots of local information but unfortunately its all mixed in with the directions, making it very difficult to follow, We spent more time trying to work out where we were, than looking at where we were going – at least Mr RR did; I just wasted time taking lots of photos!

So….another book bites the dust and we consoled ourselves with a cream tea – yum!
